As Above, So Below

Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 50 x 50 cm
Year Painted: 2025

This original painting invites contemplation on the connection between the outer world and the inner self. Looking upward through a canopy of trees, the layered greens, shifting light, and intertwined branches mirror the emotional complexity within us—joy, confusion, sadness, and clarity. Amid this intricate tapestry, light always finds a way through. The aqua background symbolizes harmony and the gentle flow of emotions, reminding us that when we allow our feelings to move freely, the light within can truly emerge.

The process of Painting
"As above, So below”

There are moments in nature that feel like mirrors—showing us not just what is outside, but what lives within. One of those moments came to me while standing beneath a canopy of trees, looking upward into the layers of light and green.

In that view, I didn’t just see trees. I saw my inner world.

The branches crisscrossed like thoughts. The shifting greens, ranging from soft whites to deep almost-black tones, reflected the full spectrum of emotions I carry—joy, sadness, confusion, clarity. The leaves scattered in every direction mirrored the restless movement of the mind and heart. And yet, within all that complexity, I noticed something important: the presence of light.

Some beams barely peeked through, faint and subtle, while others broke open the canopy with radiance. To me, that light symbolizes hope, truth, or clarity—the gentle reminder that even in chaos, light always finds a way through.

When I created As Above, So Below, I chose an aqua background. For me, aqua represents the ocean of emotions we all move through. It’s fluid, ever-changing, but also cleansing. By allowing emotions to flow rather than hold them back, we create the space for light to enter.

This painting became a meditation on a timeless question:
Can the above be as below? Can the outer world reflect the inner world?

When we look closely—whether at the trees above us or the canvas before us—we often find that the answer is yes.
