Companion

Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 90 x 70 cm
Year Painted: 2025

Companion is inspired by the quiet presence of a small autograph tree that sits in my studio -  a steady presence in my studio and a silent witness to my creative process. His calm, steady energy accompanies me as I paint, think, and dream. The vibrant orange background reflects the warmth and creative force that flows between us, while softer surrounding tones bring balance and gentleness to the composition. This piece is a celebration of simplicity, presence, and the silent companionship that supports us in the everyday moments of our lives.

The process of Painting "Companion”

There is a quiet companionship that forms in the studio—one that doesn’t speak, move loudly, or demand attention. It simply exists, and yet its presence shapes everything. This painting was born from that kind of presence.

In my studio, there is a small autograph tree who has become one of my most loyal companions. When I first brought him home—yes, in my heart he has always been a he—he lived in soil. Eventually, I moved him into water, and something beautiful happened. He began to thrive. His roots grew long and strong, and new leaves unfurled one by one, almost as if he were responding to being seen, nurtured, and allowed to simply be.

He sits in front of me every day as I paint, write, plan, dream, or sit in stillness. His presence is grounding. Quiet. Patient. He listens without words, absorbs without effort, and reminds me to slow down and return to what is real. In many ways, he holds space for my creative process.

This painting was created as a still life—he was right there in front of me as I painted him. The background in the painting is a vibrant orange, a color deeply connected to the sacral chakra: the seat of creativity, emotional flow, and expression. Orange feels alive. It pulses. It moves. And it mirrors the creative dialogue that exists between us every day in my studio.

To soften the composition, I chose lighter tonalities around the tree, inviting light, ease, and breath into the painting. I wanted the piece to feel warm and gentle—like the presence of someone who stays beside you simply because they care.

This painting is a celebration of the quiet companions in our lives—the beings (human or not) who remind us that we are not alone in our becoming. Sometimes, the most meaningful connections are silent, rooted, and steady.

The ones who grow with us.

with love,
