The process of Painting
"Soft Armor”
There is a quiet lesson that nature returns to again and again: strength does not always announce itself. Sometimes it arrives in the gentlest forms.
Soft Armor was inspired by the Lady Banks' rose (Rosa banksiae), one of the few roses that grows without thorns. Every spring it becomes covered with countless small blossoms, creating a cloud of delicate flowers. It doesn't rely on sharp edges to protect itself. Instead, it simply blooms.
When I first encountered this rose, I found myself reflecting on how often we believe we must become harder to move through life. We build emotional walls, protect our hearts, and convince ourselves that vulnerability is something to outgrow.
Yet this rose offered a different perspective.
Its abundance, gentleness, and openness seemed to suggest that love itself can be a form of protection. That authenticity does not require armor. That perhaps the strongest thing we can do is remain connected to who we truly are.
That realization became the heart of this painting.
As with all of my work, the background was chosen before the subject. For me, color is never simply a backdrop—it is the emotional foundation of the painting.
Soft Armor is a diptych, allowing two emotional landscapes to exist in dialogue.
The pale rose background represents the tenderness of the heart. It speaks of compassion, vulnerability, and our willingness to remain open despite the experiences that might encourage us to close.
The light blue background reflects authenticity and expression. It symbolizes the freedom to reveal ourselves honestly, trusting that we do not need to constantly defend who we are.
Together, these colors create a conversation between feeling and expression—between the courage to remain soft and the confidence to let that softness be seen.
Creating this painting reminded me that protection does not always come from becoming stronger in the traditional sense.
Sometimes it comes from becoming more ourselves.
The Lady Banks' rose thrives without thorns. It does not apologize for its gentleness, nor does it hide its beauty. It simply exists in complete alignment with its own nature.
I believe there is something deeply liberating in that.
Soft Armor is an invitation to consider that vulnerability, kindness, and authenticity are not weaknesses to overcome, but qualities that can quietly sustain us. It is a reminder that our truest protection may come not from what we build around ourselves, but from the courage to remain open.
Perhaps our softest places are not where we are most fragile.
Perhaps they are where our greatest strength begins.
with love,
